Segment 9
If you're wondering why the program this week seems so screwed up, it's because I was expecting something else to happen. You see, this program is about exploring the limits of the Internet as a means of social activism. I wanted people to get involved by going out to my blog and making comments, asking questions and offering suggestions. No one did last week, so I have nothing new to say this week. Kind of upsetting when you get down to it. Each week I envisioned that I would have someone to debate about the social activism project of the week before.
Since no one went out to my blog NOR called attention to my blog to their friends, I am left with nothing much to do this week. I have all these ideas for lessening the social ills of this country, but I cannot get anything done unless some people, that's you, get involved by posting to my blog and advertising its existence to their friends. Your response is probably that no individual can make a difference. Stranger things have happened on the Internet.
I draw your attention to the aftermath of 9/11. The story I get is that there was this kid up in New York who looked at the death and destruction of the World Trade Center and screamed to himself, "My God, we're going to war unless someone stops them." So what'd he do? He started contacting his friends and started an email campaign to halt the war in Afghanistan. He got something like 100000 people involved. Are you getting this? One guy about 20 years old was able to mobilize over 100000 trying to achieve a goal. At the same time the web site Moveon.Org was looking to do the same thing. They teamed up with the kid and mobilized a whole hell of a lot of people to stop us from going into Afghanistan. Bush ignored them and we went to war in Afghanistan. If Gore had won in 2000, we would not have gone to war in Afghanistan. We would not have gone to war in Iraq... And it would have been have been because of one twentysomething. The Internet allows people to leverage their assets. All it takes is word of mouth or in this case, email, and suddenly you can get something done.
You also have to get around the idea that failure discredits an idea. If you fail while trying to achieve a goal and learn from that failure, then you can succeed. That's just the way things are. Too many people on the Left look at the failure of government to achieve any positive social change and assume the failure is caused by an outside source. It's got to be the Republicans, the economy, or any other source except the fact that government cannot do the job.
Experiencing failure is necessary if you want to be a master craftsman in any field. If you cannot handle failure, then you cannot ever be the best in your field.
Come on. Get involved. Read about last week's program and post something. I need some help whitewashing this fence. It'll be fun... maybe.
