I played Bonny Blue Bonnets by Davie Post.
The first English monarch of the Stuart line was James the First of England. He came to power in 1603 on the death of Elizabeth the First who died without issue. James the First had prepared himself to be the king of all of Britain. He was king of Scotland before he was King of England. He had established a court in Edinburgh in the late 1500's. He had a foreign policy. He knew how to run a country. He had a massive spy service to keep him up to date on things going on in England and Ireland and elsewhere. He had a huge number of people in England on his payroll. When Elizabeth died, he had lined everything up so that he just walked in and took over. James the First produced the King James version of the Bible. He was an extremely able monarch. Again, he was Scottish. He was the first Scotsman to rule all of the British Isles.
The Stuart line was deposed 1688, because James the Second was a Catholic and too autocratic for the British. By the 1680's people wanted more control of their lives. When James the Second was deposed and William of Orange became king, Parliament started to have a major role in ruling the country. The divine right of kings, the ancient doctrine that sovereigns are representatives of God and derive their right to rule directly from God, was dying.
The song I just played deals with the revolt that occurred 1745 where the Highland clans of Scotland tried to put their candidate on the throne of England, the grandson of James the Second, Charles Edward Stuart, called Bonny Prince Charley. Why was Bonny Prince Charley qualified to be king? His grandfather, James the Second, had been king for three years. That meant that he, Charles Stuart, was qualified to be king of England, Scotland and Ireland. He had lived all his life in Rome. He knew nothing about running a court. He knew nothing about running a government. He knew nothing about... much of anything. He just happened to be descended from the last Scottish king of all of Britain. Some of the Scotch wanted a Scottish king and to hell with who was better qualified to rule. In the Spring of 1745 with the help of the French, Bonny Prince Charley landed in Scotland and captured Edinburgh. Bonny Prince Charley had three military victories in Scotland then lost decisively when he crossed into
England. He was hunted from safe house to safe house, then escaped to France. He arrived to discover that France had betrayed him by agreeing to expel him from France and would never back his move again. He wandered around Europe looking for someone to back him for another try for the throne of England. No one would. He ended up back in Rome. He died there in 1788 without doing much of anything with his life.
When I read up on this song, I was struck how much the history follows the election of 2004. It looks like to me that we have two candidates, but one prepared to do the job and another did not.
John F. Kerry felt that he should be President because he spent a few months in Vietnam thirty years ago. During the period from 1971 until 2004, John Kerry had NOT prepared himself to rule. Kerry had not introduced almost any legislation in the Senate. He had lead no floor fights. He had given few speeches in the Senate. Every Friday all he could think of was getting off for the weekend, so he could play. During the campaign, Kerry took time off from campaigning to do wind surfing. As near as I can tell he believed that he deserved to be President because his initials were JFK. Plus he showed me he had a lack of character. Let me tell you this story.
John F. Kerry was sliding down the slope on his skies. He fell down. He blamed one of the Secret Service. To me that was a show of ingratitude. Who in his right mind rakes someone over the coals in public when that individual has the responsibility for keeping him alive?
As I said that shows me that Kerry lacked character. If it were the first time it happened, then I would be willing to cut him some slack, but throughout his life Kerry has been unwilling to admit that he makes mistakes and is quite willing to blame others for his failures. He never can seem to take a position without hinting that the exact opposite position appeals to him as well. Why do the Democrats want him as President? Because he is a Democrat, not because he is qualified.
George Bush was governor of the State of Texas. He prepared himself to be President by doing all the things that a leader in an executive office must do. He learned how to prepare a budget. He learned how to move an agenda through the legislature. He tried to get some experience in foreign policy. He didn't do a great job, but he at least tried to get the experience he needed to be President of the United States. And once he was President, he assembled the most experienced cabinet that I have ever seen. Plus he showed me that he DID have character. Let me tell you a story.
George Bush was riding this bike. He took a header over the handle bars. he jumped up and said, "Chills and spills and excitement every day around here." He took responsibility for his failure and laughed at it. When Bush says something, he means it. If he commits himself to doing something, he tries his best to do it. Most of the time he succeeds.
God, some people hate George Bush. The Right has started calling the unreasoned hatred of our President, the Bush Derangement Syndrome or BDS. Bush is one OR all of the below.
o Bush is an idiot. He is so stupid that he has to ask Karl Rove to make all
his decisions for him.
o Bush is a devil. He can cause hurricanes to come in and destroy Louisiana
and in the process wipe out the Democratic Party's stranglehold on New
Orleans.
o Bush is the same as Hitler. I mean, Bush has rounded up his political
enemies and has killed them. Or rather he wants to round them up and kill
them. Or rather he refutes his political enemies and makes them look stupid,
so that makes him Hitler. Let me get back to you on that one.
As near as I can tell, BDS causes the Left to overestimate and underestimate Bush and then be surprised when he does what he says he was going to do. Why does that make sense? If you are going to oppose someone, shouldn't you be able to articulate a reason why you opposing them, besides, "I hate the guy."? Just asking.
