Did you know that there is a way to have $6/barrel oil? Right now, oil is hovering between $40 and $70 per barrel. Why? The simple reason is that the United States government is in the way. Right now the law is set up so that ANYONE can stop drilling of any oil wells in the United States. The environmentalists have reached an extreme that they want NO growth anywhere. As near as I can tell the members of the environmentalist movement, not the leadership, but the general members, are people who sincerely believe that any drilling for oil will inevitably cause environmental damage.
Times have changed. The oil industry has learned how to drill without destroying everything around the rigs. It's time someone acknowledged that and asked for $6/barrel oil.
In addition we have no oil refineries in this country, or rather we have too few. If we could streamline the application for oil refineries, then the price of gasoline would fall drastically. Refineries too, have learned how to do their job without polluting the environment. People forget something, pollution is a form of inefficiency. Businesses have an incentive for cutting down on pollution.
Maybe you are still not getting this. At $6/barrel, the oil industry would have to make their money by selling in volume and by being as efficient as possible. Pollution would be a bad idea at this price.
The laws in this country have to change, so that the environmental movement could not sue unless they can prove that environmental damage HAS occurred, instead of might occur under some odd scenario. If oil dropped in price, because the U.S. was back in the drilling business, then the poor in this country would benefit immensely as would people in the Third World.
We are in the process of sending billions of dollars to the Third World to alleviate their poverty. If we lowered the price of oil for everyone, then the countries in the Third World would be impacted more than we would. The high cost of oil means that the Third World has a hard time getting their act together.
The way I would implement this project is to make sure there checks and balances in the system. Right now the oil industry is held in deep suspicion. The drilling would have to be done a transparent fashion. The oil refineries would have to have to be monitored for compliance with air quality standards.
There is one other thing you need to think about. At $6/barrel, the jihadis' source of funds would dry up. In fact a large number of our enemies would stop having money to attack us.
Ah, well, no one is going to listen to this idea as well.
